A table lamp or chandelier made from bottles is no longer a fancy innovation, but a typical piece of apartment design. The advantage of such fixtures is that they are not difficult to make their own hands. The article introduces techniques and ideas for making lamps from different kinds of bottles.

Pros and cons of homemade lanterns

A lamp from a bottle, made by hand, has several advantages over purchased analogues:

  1. It is trivially cheaper.
  2. Raw materials that need to be disposed of are used and get a "second life".
  3. Making a lamp is not as difficult as it seems. All you have to do is not deviate from the instructions.
  4. It is implemented exactly your vision of design, in all the details, instead of looking for the right light in the stores.

The disadvantages are also not a revelation:

  1. Glass should be handled with extreme care.
  2. Getting cut by plastic is also much easier than it seems.
  3. Any deviation from the manufacturing algorithm can result in the lamp simply not turning on.

Types of bottle lights

On the table

More often than not, the bottle performs the role of a table lamp. This does not mean only a floor lamp with a lampshade. Sometimes the container itself is enough. If you put a garland inside, LED strip or something like that, you've got yourself a table lamp. The main difficulty in making it is to make a normal hole for the wire.

For the floor

For floor lamps, plastic is usually used. These can be, for example, petals from a bottle that form the lampshade. In addition, fragments of plastic containers themselves can become the "legs" of the future lamp.

For the ceiling

On the wall

It would be extremely difficult to make a complete sconce, so it is better to make do with a lamp shade made of a regular glass bottle. The traditional green color of the glass will work well. The plafond is installed on the frame of an old wall sconce.

Outdoor

Beautiful lights for the street.

Made from bottles with their own hands lights for the street, unlike their store counterparts, are more resistant to the sun and constant precipitation. A good trick is to equip such a light fixture not with a lamp holder, but with an LED flashlight. It will be charged by the sun and turn on independently with the onset of darkness.

Tip. It is better not to paint bottle lanterns for the street, and if you do paint, then with a material with high resistance to moisture and the sun.

What you need

The main improvised means for making a bottle light are:

  • the containers themselves;
  • sandpaper;
  • lamp with a socket;
  • glass cutter;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • eye and hand protection: glasses, gloves, etc.

Glass or plastic

For your own handmade lamps are good as glass blanks, as well as plastic. The advantages of plastic are obvious: it is harder to get hurt, it is easy to cut and fasten. Usually plastic bottles are used for making table or floor lamps, but chandeliers from them are not uncommon. However, glass is preferred more often.

Table

The scheme of making a table lamp from a glass bottle is as follows:

  1. Determine on the workpiece a place for the wire, mark it with a plaster or other adhesive material.
  2. Put the bottle lying down, make a hole with a diamond drill.
  3. After that, the container should be held in water (preferably warm) to remove all residues of the label, dirt.
  4. Carefully pull the wire through the hole to the neck, and there bring it to the lamp holder.
  5. Securely fasten the lampshade to the neck. That's it, the table lamp from a bottle is ready.

In Loft Style

There are many options for lighting fixtures from bottles in the industrial style. You can, for example, hang a rectangular frame, divided into many sections, and in each of them place a bottle with a lamp inside, one color or different.

These same containers could also be attached to the platform.

Another option would be to install on a structure of pipes a plafond in the shape of a bottle. The main thing is to match its threads with the same adapter.

Chandelier

The original and stylish hanging chandelier from a wine bottle is not difficult to make - it is enough to adhere to the algorithm of actions.

  1. Soak the workpiece in water, remove the fragments of labels, then carefully wipe dry.
  2. Use the glass cutter to make a cut line on the bottle. The cut is made transversely. The work should be done without haste, so as not to disturb the evenness of the line.
  3. To make the unnecessary half fall off, you should put the workpiece under water and alternate between hot and cold temperatures. The bottle will separate neatly along the line.
  4. To give additional smoothness and evenness to the cut, its edges are processed with sandpaper.
  5. A wire is pulled into the neck, connect it to the cartridge.

One interesting idea is to glue glass stones of different shades to the surface of the bottle. This can slightly "eat up" the brightness, but will add beauty.

Floor

One interesting option for a floor lamp is a "palm tree". For this you need a lot of bottles of brown plastic. Each is cut into several pieces, and "prongs" are cut on the sides to resemble a palm tree trunk. Plastic blanks are put on a high base, fixed on the floor. "Leaves" will be fragments of green plastic bottles. Under the "foliage" are attached LED lights placed in small plastic containers.

Suspension from plastic

Not only from glass, you can make an unusual chandelier with your own hands. A plastic bottle with a volume of 5 liters will also be suitable for this. Everything is done as follows:

  1. With a stationery knife, cut off the bottom in a straight line.
  2. You will need a couple of dozen plastic spoons. You will need to cut off their convex parts and glue them to the plastic blank on the circumference, from the neck to the bottom.
  3. You can plug the neck with a part with a hanger from an old lamp.
  4. Inside the bottle is carried a wire with a socket and a light bulb.

Asian style chandelier

Damaged plafond of a sconce can be replaced with a completely new one, made by hand. One such option would be a wall-mounted Chinese lantern. It will look organic in the room with the design "under Asia".

  1. Take a plastic bottle of up to 2 liters.
  2. Make vertical cuts all around the circumference from the neck to the bottom to make a "noodle". The bottom and the neck do not need to be cut.
  3. Through the cuts it is necessary to connect the bottom to the neck with a wire. Due to this, the bottle becomes short and rounded, turning into a lantern lamp shade.
  4. In the same way - through the cuts - a cartridge is inserted and a wire is led to it through the neck.
  5. The Chinese lantern is mounted on the wall.

Street

The basis for a street lantern can be regular candles. Covering them with a bottle of colored glass with a cut bottom and corked neck, you can protect the fire from moisture. If we talk about a more creative option, it requires a whole bottle with dark glass. You need to make a hole in it more than half the height, and put it sideways in a beautiful container with sand. The sand itself should be partly inside the container and partly around it. Adding inside the bottle various decorative elements of marine entourage (shells, corals, artificial algae) and installing a lamp or LED flashlight, you can get a really original lamp for the street.
